The Community Foundation acts as a clearing house for a large number of scholarships funded from local individuals and organizations.  A single application will match your qualifications against all available scholarships.  You may apply as a graduating senior, and each succeeding year you are enrolled in college.


Academic Scholarship Application:

The academic scholarship application period will open on January 15,  and close on February 15. Keep your user name and password to reuse. Frederick County residents who are graduating seniors, or students currently enrolled in college are encouraged to apply. An online application is available from a link on their webpage during the application period.

The Korean War Veterans Association

The Korean War Veterans Association provides a $1000.00 scholarship annually to any student who is a bloodline relative of a Korean veteran who meets their membership requirements.  The scholarship is administered by the Frederick Community Foundation.  See the separate information on how to apply to the community foundation, and be sure you application indicates your qualification for this scholarship.

American Legion Scholarships

The American Legion, Legion Auxiliary, and Sons of the American Legion all offer scholarships to graduating LHS seniors and college students. You can usually get their applications in the Guidance office, or contact them; http://www.post191.com/


American Legion Oratorical Contest

Each January the Legion holds an oratorical contest in which students prepare and deliver a 3 to 5 minute speech on some aspect of the U.S. Constitution. A student who progresses to the National Championship can earn as much as $23,000.00. DON’T WAIT to enter. You can enter every year during high school! Samsung American Legion Scholarship

Nine $20,000.00 scholarships. Juniors who attend American Legion Boys State, or the American Legion Auxiliary Girls State program, and are are descendants of U.S. veterans who served during a period of war are eligible to this scholarship. Counties Four Post 10076 Mount Airy, Maryland is offering six $500.00 scholarships to be given to deserving students:

Sam Jewell Memorial Scholarship, Frank Dertzbaugh III Memorial Scholarship, Robert Stevenson Scholarship, Bill and Chad Ruth Memorial Scholarship and the Margaret J. Shaw Nursing Scholarship.

VFW Voice of Democracy Scholarship

The VFW holds an annual scholarship competition. Students compete by writing and recording an original essay on the current year’s theme. Recordings are submitted to the local VFW chapter. Local winners will advance to the district, state, and national levels of the competition. The national winner gets a $30,000.00 scholarship, however students who place can earn money at each level.
